Rihanna California King Bed
Nose to nose
Palm to palm
We were always just that close
Wrist to wrist
Toe to toe
Lips that felt just like the inside of a rose
So, how come when I reach out my finger
It feels like more than distance between us
In this California king bed
We're ten thousand miles apart
I've been California wishing on these stars
For your heart for me
My California king
Eye to eye
Cheek to cheek
Side by side
You were sleeping next to me
Arm in arm
Dusk to dawn
With the curtains drawn
And a little last night on these sheets
So, how come when I reach out my fingers
It seems like more than distance between us
In this California king bed
We're ten thousand miles apart
I've been California wishing on these stars
For your heart for me
My California king
Just when I felt like giving up on us
You turned around and gave me one last touch
That made everything feel better
And even then my eyes got wetter
So confused wanna ask you if you love me
But I don't wanna seem so weak
Maybe I've been California dreaming
Yeah yeah yeah
In this California king bed
We're ten thousand miles apart
I've been California wishing on these stars
For your heart for me
My California king
My California king
In this California king bed
We're ten thousand miles apart
I've been California wishing on these stars
For your heart for me
My California king
Analysis
California King Bed is a song performed by Rihanna from her fifth studio album, Loud. The song was released as the album's fifth single on May 13th, 2011 through Def Jam. The song was written by Andrew Harr, Jermaine Jackson, Priscilla Renea and Alex Delicata, and was produced by Harr and Jackson under their stage name The Runners. Musically it is a ballad, incorporated elements of rock music. I believe the target audience of the music video is lyrically aimed at females but because of the video aimed at males also. The age range for the video is anything from early teens such as thirteen to late thirties early forties. Rihanna's music is appealing to a range of audiences for different reasons.
A narrative is developed throughout the music video and it is based on a real life situation. The mise-en-scene is almost all set in a romantic and tropical setting. The video begins with Rihanna laid in long grass followed by her on a beach. It then continues on to see her in a bedroom setting with a male featuring in the video taking the role as her partner in the narrative. The mise-en-scene is frequently based around the bed referring to the name on the song. The video features color and black and white scenes. The way Rihanna is dressed comes across to the audience as been seductive and sexual. It isn't an outfit the star would regularly wear in every day life. It is different to the way the majority of females of her age would dress. The reason the artist portrays herself in the video in such a way is because of the narrative. She has to appear sexy and feminine because of the story line. The lyrics aren't stereotypical of the artist because this song i know is different to the majority of her other songs. But the way she is dressed and the way she presents herself in the video is stereotypical of the artist as in most of her music videos she wears very little and acts in the same manor.
Throughout the music video diegetic and non diegetic sound can be heard. At the beginning of the video non diegetic sound of possibly the wind or a car driving past can be heard whilst the camera is focusing on Rihanna. Dietgetic sound can then be heard as the camera changes so that the trees blowing and the curtains moving can be seen and heard. Non diegetic and diegetic sound of the sea can also be heard at different parts of the music video. Diegetic sound from Rihanna can be heard as she sings the lyrics and the audience can see her doing this as well as non diegetic lyrics that are heard but not seen coming from the artist.
A variety of different camera angles and edits are used to tell the narrative and also create atmosphere throughout the music video. A slow zoom out is used at the beginning of the video whilst the audience see Rihanna laid in the grass on the floor and the camera angle is taken from above. An establishing shot is also used at the beginning of the video to show the location. A long shot is used to show the scenery such as the sea and the beach. A low angle is used to show Rihanna as been important and the main focus of the music video. A dissolve is used as part of the editing of the video to fade one shot into the next one. Continuity editing is also used to continue the narrative without confusing to the audience. Close ups and extreme close ups of the artist take place throughout the video to show Rihanna and the emotion and sincerity in her face. Two shots are used to show the relationship between the male and female explaining the narrative in more depth.
